BACKGROUND & VERIFICATION

1. Do you have a current fingerprint clearance card? In Arizona, this is a state-issued background check. It's not optional — it's the baseline.
2. Is your CPR certification current? Ask to see the card. "Yes" without documentation means nothing.
3. Are you licensed and insured? What happens if something breaks? What happens if they're injured in your home?

EXPERIENCE & APPROACH

4. Have you worked with someone in a similar situation? Not just "have you done senior care" — but have they worked with someone with dementia, mobility challenges, or a specific health condition your loved one has.
5. How do you handle a difficult day? You want to hear patience, communication, and calm — not just compliance.
6. What would you do if you couldn't make a scheduled visit? Their backup plan tells you everything about their reliability.

COMMUNICATION & FIT

7. How will you update me after each visit? You should know what happened, not just that everything was "fine."
8. What are your boundaries around tasks? Clarity up front prevents uncomfortable conversations later.
9. Have you ever quit a client? Why? This reveals honesty and self-awareness.

PRACTICAL LOGISTICS

10. What are your rates and how do you bill? Get it in writing before the first visit.
11. Are you available on weekends and holidays? Care needs don't take weekends off.
12. Can I speak with a reference from a current or recent client? Anyone who won't provide this isn't someone to hire.

TRUST YOUR GUT

After the interview, ask yourself: would my parent actually like this person? Technical qualifications matter — but so does warmth, presence, and the ability to sit with someone quietly. Those qualities are harder to verify but impossible to fake.
